Liposuction is an easy, affordable and non-invasive way to get rid of your double chin. According to the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction is the most popular surgical cosmetic procedure in the nation. In 2015, almost 400,000 procedures were performed and it’s becoming increasingly popular for those who want to get rid of their double chin.
Fat accumulates easily in the neck and chin, which is why the appearance of a double chin is pretty common though you don’t have to be overweight to get one. Double chins are often genetic and affect both men and women. Even something as simple as bad posture can lead to a double chin.
However, under the chin is also one of the hardest areas of the body to get rid of excess fat. Unlike the legs, the stomach and even the arms, there aren’t many ways to exercise the chin and throat in a way that gets rid of a pronounced double chin completely. That’s why many Americans have begun to use liposuction.
Chin liposuction targets the flesh just below your chin. It removes the fat in the area, but doesn’t change skin appearance, which means it’s best for patients with elastic skin. It’s safe, effective and quick. Fat doesn’t accumulate in the area again, meaning patients are left with long-term results that age naturally with them.
“It’s a lot easier than people think,” said Dr. Michael Garver, a Miami-based surgeon. He says he performs the procedure daily. “We do small incisions just under the chin. We also do behind the ears if necessary. We choose these places because even if you do scar it’s not apparent. For the most part, there is no scarring and for those with light scarring, it fades quickly over time.”
Garver says it’s not often asked for though even if it is becoming more and popular. Actually, most people come in knowing they want to get rid of extra skin or fat around the neck. Some ask for a facelift instead but Garver says he is able to point them to something less invasive that can help with the issues they’re having and that looks more natural.
“You might want to think about liposuction even if you don’t think the double chin is your issue,” he said. “Sagging around the jawline, maybe your face is more square when it used to be heart. These are all things that taking the fat out of the chin can help.”
The process is relatively easy; most surgeons use a local anesthetic with an IV sedation. The procedure takes about an hour, with the surgeon doing small incision under the chin or behind the ears. They remove the fat and even offer some contouring for a more personalized look.
For the first five days, Dr. Garver says the patient should wear a bandage all day. They should also wear one while sleeping at night for an additional week.
On the fifth day after the surgery, stitches are removed but patients should expect some swelling and bruising, which should subside after just a couple weeks. Patients who are struggling with pain can take pain medication, rest and use cold compresses. The healing time takes about one week, though some people heal faster, but surgeons say most patients shouldn’t exercise for at least 18-21 days after the procedure.
“A streamlined neck can dramatically improve your appearance,” said Garver. “You want the right neck for you and the right surgeon can give you the look you want.”
It’s important to choose the right surgeon, he said. In addition to looking for a surgeon who is board certified, he says it’s important to speak with a surgeon who is looking to understand the exact face type you’re going for.
Liposuction is an easy way to take care of the double chin, sagging skin, a less-pronounced jawline and many other issues that patients may have with the lower half of their face. But you don’t have to be out for months. It’s so easy that after just a few weeks, you could be out showing off your new chin and neck in no time.
